This work draws upon investigations into glaze conductivity for electronics. Sensors in the glaze detect the electrical capacitance of the human touch and the lamp (which consists of an integrated string of fine led lights) turns on and off in a rotary manner. The lighting of the lamp occurs gradually, by moving the fingers along the rim of the inner bowl, from what would be the eastern cardinal point to the western cardinal point on a hypothetical compass face. This gesture recalls the cycle of the day, as well as an eclipse of an astral body.

This tactile lamp is characterized by collaborative production methods. Local ceramics Master, Chan Guo-xiang made the large exterior lamp recipient. Ken made the central element, whose surface was subsequently milled with a cnc machine to obtain an undulating texture. With assistance from the Yingge Museum International Artists Residency Center, the ceramic elements were fired in a local factory. In-Flexions undertook the soldering of electronic circuit boards and programmed the device.

Cutting Edges focuses on customising existing digital tools as a means of creating new ways to design or modify objects. This implies a shift from conceiving unique objects to developing interactive systems where end-users can produce their own object.

Cutting Edges aims to allow the public to easily ‘design’ a plate collection using a template on a tablet. The parameters that may be customized on the tablet include the number of plates in the collection, the width and breadth of the upper (smallest) and lowest (largest) plates. The tablet calculates the incremental graduations in size between the individual elements. A digital cnc machine enables the plates in this collection to be ‘cut out’ from standard slip-cast porcelain blanks designed by In-Flexions. The slip-cast blank plates are characterized by a textured base which was developed by a CAD design, and engraved into a plaster mould with a cnc machine.

Working in close association Ken, artist and Studio Technician of Yingge Museum International Artists Residency Center, In-Flexions used a Kinect infrared projector and camera to record, track and interpret the hand gestures of the artist during the throwing process. These gestures were transformed in real-time into a three dimensional graphic landscape on the designer’s computer screen. Finally these three dimensional landscapes were converted into graphic icons and motifs and milled with a cnc machine into the bases of the same bisque platters.

The title ‘Back to Back’ refers to collaborative DJ practices in electronic and house music clubs. A team of DJs act like a tag team, and various dance sets may include live harmonic mixing and re-mixing of tracks, which may be repeated, and spiced up with a higher tempo or a whole different foundation.  As a student, Brument engaged in DJ & VJ activities, and this interest in the creation of hybrid processes which ‘mix’ both the hand and digital tools is evident in most of his projects.

La Carte Blanche Habitat imprimé spécule sur l’outil numérique et sur sa capacité à développer une chaîne continue de la conception à la fabrication en élargissant ici son champ d’investigation au bâti : une spéculation qui bouscule les règles traditionnelles de l’aménagement intérieur où gros oeuvre, second oeuvre et finitions fusionnent grâce aux technologies les plus avancées de l’impression 3D. Ainsi, paramétrées selon l’épaisseur variable des parois, la prise en compte du mobilier et des équipements techniques, de fines couches de matière se superposent pour créer un aménagement sur mesure pouvant se moduler au cours de la réalisation. La pièce présentée ici est un module – chambre, cabine de douche, dressing – de 4,65 sur 2,20 mètres.
Pour mettre en forme cette Carte Blanche et développer ce concept productif révolutionnaire destiné à l’habitat, nous avons fait appel à la société Voxeljet qui développe la seule imprimante 3D européenne capable de produire des pièces en béton de grande taille (4 m [L] x 2 m [l] x 1 m [h])

Il s’agit d’un dispositif, élaboré et développé en collaboration avec EDF-R&D, qui permet d’observer en temps réel la consommation d’énergie d’un bâtiment en détaillant les différents usages, par exemple le chauffage, l’informatique, ou l’éclairage.

En comparant cette consommation avec des objectifs, l’horloge, placée dans un lieu de vie de l’entreprise, permet de sensibiliser les occupants et les visiteurs du bâtiment à l’économie d’énergie, incitant ainsi chacun à consommer mieux.

Ce dispositif a reçu le 15 novembre 2012 une étoile de l’observeur du design 13 ainsi que le prix du design numérique remis par Fleur Pellerin, ministre déléguée aux PME, à l’Innovation et à l’Économie numérique.
